"Sadness and joy in the life of giraffes" is the story of a nine years old girl that crosses the city of Lisbon searching for the only person that can offer help her: the Portuguese prime minister Pedro Passos Coelho. In this performance, Tiago Rodrigues uses theater as an attempt to interfere with our perception of social and political reality, but also of theater. Exploring the subject of childhood, Tiago Rodrigues creates a performance for adults where a child presents a school project and undertakes the encyclopedic task of trying to explain the world. In that strange world called Lisbon we have the economic crisis, the heroic adventure of a teddy bear with suicidal tendencies named Judy Garland, the Discovery Channel, a violinist that it’s just a picture, a black panther, the school dictionary of Sampaio publishers, the Bulgarian scientist and Russian playwright Anton Checkov and a girl too tall for her age whose mother used to call Giraffe. Immersed in the darkness of the hopeful childhood imagination, this performance is fearful of what children think and angry at what the adults do.
